Okinawa Sunrise 043

The last day I was in Okinawa, I woke up extremely early to catch the sunrise. After all, it’s not everyday I get to see a sunrise over in Okinawa. ^^.

We got to the beach at about 5am and waited in the dark.

Out Late in Okinawa

Usually, except for the night life, there’s not much to see if you’re out late anywhere… ok.. if you’re in Tokyo, you get to see people vomiting and sleeping on the sidewalks. That’s interesting in it’s own way. ^^. I was out late along International Street in Okinawa. Was there in the evening for some events/parties and before I knew it, it was close to midnight.

There were quite a few interesting things to see late that night too. Let’s start off when the night was young; what I saw in the evening.

First, it was the matter of getting to International St.

Okinawan Roads at Night

Okinawa Roads at Night 002

I like roads at night. For one, I find it easier to drive (at night) because there’s less glare. Photo opportunities are also bountiful; car lights are pretty.

There’s a certain quality about night shots that I can’t put my finger on. A little help? ^^.

Okinawa Shurijo Castle Park

Okinawa wasn’t always one of Japan’s many prefectures. In fact, it was a small independent kingdom to begin with. The Ryukyu Kingdom ruled the Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa) for almost 400 years before they were annexed by Japan. Back when the Ryukyu Kingdom was still around, the King held his court at Shurijo.

Another interesting fact, the Ryukyu Kingdom had a tributary relationship with China since the 15th century. When the Satsuma clan invaded the kingdom in 1609, they were forced into maintaining a tributary relationship with Satsuma and the Tokugawa shogunate; this on top of their relationship with China. Must have been pretty hard for them. Small ocean kingdom getting bullied all the time. >< .
