Realized recently I haven’t been spending enough time with her. I last took her out to a friend’s wedding where we took some fansupertastic photos. I guess it’s about time we got reacquainted.

This started it all.

As you already have guessed, this is an iPad/iPhone/iPod touch, basically iOS application. So why did I make this? What was my inspiration?

It was not a what, but rather a who. She was this shy little girl who always cried whenever we met. I wanted a way to help her remember me.

Decided to call this app “Papa Mama” as I reckon parents will want to use this to help their kids remember the first 2 important words – instead of Ken.

(although another friend of mine thinks it will be iPad)

Papa Mama lets you compose picture cards from your own photos, your own words and even your own voice! It’s a great tool for raising bilingual, trilingual or multilingual kids. Especially so if you’re an expat living in a foreign country.

Have separate sets of words in English, Japanese, Mandarin, Malay, German, Spanish and even Klingon (sorry, couldn’t help it)!

I think it’s great for families living overseas to help their kids learn new words as well as remember their grandparents’ faces.

Each picture card takes center stage – no fancy buttons or controls that divert your attention away. Large photos with text that is kept clear and as large as possible. Put the application in auto-play mode and the result is a beautiful unobtrusive slideshow, visible from way across the room.

Designed it to be extremely minimalist and simple to use.

- Tap to play sound (if recorded).
- Swipe to progress to the next or previous picture card.
- Long press to hide/present the top toolbar. (hide the menu from the kid)

Thanks to Kam and chun who survived the beta testing process. Another big thank you to chun for working on the wonderful graphics and icons in the app. Thank you guys!

Also many thanks to Q who helped with the chinese translations.

Oh. By the way, I was greeted with a smile last time we met. ^^.

Mission accomplished.

Live on iTunes Preview, and App Store, in English, 日本語 and 中文.

This is also why I’m glad the iPod Touch does FaceTime too. Will get one for the grandparents and maybe one for home. All you need is a wifi connection and everything just works. The iPhone 4 might not be the first phone that does video calling, but who cares?

It’s the first one that gets it right.

And now with the iPod Touch and quite possibly the iPad (we all know it’s coming), FaceTime is already a hit in my books. The fact that it’s on a portable device and not a “computer” makes it easy for alot of people to use. All they have to do is pick it up. No complex computer manipulations.

The only downside is that you need a wifi connection. I’ve read articles that say you can run FaceTime on 3G if you jailbreak or do some other voodoo. But I don’t know about the chat quality though. If I have to say “can you hear me”, “I can’t really see you properly” etc. my experience is already spoilt.

Technology should not get in our way when communicating. Although I welcome the option to, I don’t particularly miss not being able to FaceTime over the cellular network.

So far I’ve used FaceTime with friends in Australia, Canada, Singapore and Japan. It’s one thing looking at a photo of my buddy’s baby boy, it’s another when I get to see him in real time. He looks alot like his father! Kam gave me a tour of his beautiful new home which I probably will invade when I visit Canada! Having 2 cameras, front and back, is really useful for times when we want to show things besides our pretty faces. ^^.

I really like the commercial.

Have you tried FaceTime?
