日本人の知らない日本語

毎週木曜の夜中12時は必ず「日本人の知らない日本語」というドラマを見ています。このドラマ、面白いのでけっこう好きです。仲里依紗のファンになった。日本語と日本の文化の勉強にもなる。

Thursday late nights are spent in front of the TV watching a sitcom called  日本人の知らない日本語, nihonjin no shiranai nihongo; Japanese that Japanese do not know. I like the show and the lead actress, Riisa Naka, is pretty cute too. The show is quite informative too. Something fun for learning Japanese and Japanese culture.

Saw the manga the show is based on at the university coop. Picked it up, read a few pages and decided to get it. The strips are are interesting and for a Japanese learner like me, I can relate to some of the situations depicted in the manga. It’s extremely funny.

It’s easy to read, so I suspect that this manga isn’t only targeted for Japanese, but also for foreigners learning Japanese too.

好きなページを少し紹介。

I want to show you some strips from the manga, just hope I don’t get lost in translation. ^^.

日本人の知らない日本語

During the entrance ceremony for a Japanese language school. The principal asks, “Will those who can’t understand Japanese please raise your hand.” Of course, he’s asking the question in Japanese.

And people do raise their hands!

日本人の知らない日本語

This strip is about “new halfs” in Japan. Haruna Ai is probably the most famous new half in Japan right now. This Korean student is surprised when she realizes that the beautiful ladies she sees on TV are actually guys in dresses. She sees a boy’s urinal in the female toilet and misunderstands that they are for new halfs. They are actually for boys accompanying their mums.

日本人の知らない日本語

This one I like. I think katakana is problematic for most foreigners. I usually have to read through twice before I make the connection. It gets easier as one gains more exposure to loan words in Japan. So, in this clip, she can’t read katakana. Hoping that the shop clerk can read the list her boss drew up, she went to the convenience store. Unfortunately, the clerk is a foreigner who doesn’t read katakana too. ^^.

どうですか?日本人の方、日本語を勉強してる外国人の気持ちがもっと理解できた?

日本人の知らない日本語

In Japan, ticks indicate a wrong answer and circles (like zeros) indicate a correct answer. In this clip, the teacher makes a comment about the mistakes that the student made. She starts by saying, “Oh, this is rare, you’re an excellent student, but all your answers are wrong.”

The student replies by saying, “Damn, I got my Japanese friend to do it for me”.
