Part-time wages in Japan

Ever wondered how part-time hourly rates go in Japan?

McDonalds pays anywhere from ¥800 (high schoolers) to ¥1065 depending on which timeshift you take. Includes 30% meal discount.

Mos Burger pays pretty much the same as McD. But high schoolers start off a little better here. They also cover transportation costs.

Japanese izakaya rates are slightly better, starting off at ¥950 per hour. But in exchange, you don’t have much choice in terms of hours.

If you want to manage an izakaya, monthly rates are ¥241,000.

In British Columbia, the province where we live, minimal wage is at C$8.00/hour. These days, you can’t be independent with that kind of wage in Vancouver. Say on average people work 1,800 paid hours a year, that is only CS14,400 (roughly 1,245,000 yen per year). To have a credit card these days, banks ask that you have C$15,000 a year of income. I guess working only in McD full time here would not even qualify a credit card application from a bank…

That’s tough! I’ve heard that it’s also pretty hard applying for credit as a foreigner here. I went through the university and got a student card. It was a smooth process. Maybe because I had a scholarship and credit limit was… student. ^^. Now that I’ve graduated, they just sent me a regular card – with annual fees. I do wonder how hard it will be if I were to apply it on my own.
