On Shinkansen Seats and Toilets

Shinkansen

Shinkansen is probably the most convenient way of traveling medium-long distances in Japan. For trips with distances longer than long, fly. ^^.

Unlike flying, when using the bullet train, there’s no need to catch a bus/train to get into the city from the airport because one usually gets off (and on) the shinkansen at a major city station. In fact, you’ll only catch a bus/train to get out of the city!

View from the Shinkansen

I always look forward to this. When traveling by shinkansen, one is often presented with a gorgeous view of the Japanese countryside.

Putting chairs into place

Most shinkansen chairs can be rotated. Gives you a choice of either facing the person sitting in right front of you or the direction you’re traveling in.

I prefer the latter. When facing the person sitting in front, you both get very little leg room. I love my leg room. ^^.

They keep our shinkansen nice and clean

All packed and ready. Cleaning girls waiting for their train to arrive.

No matter how you turn them, at the end of each trip, the chairs will reorientate themselves. Think this will make a good video for “musical chairs”?

Yamabiko Shinkansen is double deckered. You can either sit on top or at the lower level.

Sendai Ekiben

The word “Ekiben (駅弁)” combines 2 words, station 駅 (eki) and bento 弁当 (packed food). Ekiben-s are packed food you can buy at the station.

Note. Buying a bento from somewhere else and eating it on the train does not make it an ekiben! ^^.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t my Shinkansen back to home sweet home Tokyo.

Leaving Sendai

My eat and drink for the journey home. Famous gyutan snack from Sendai and Yebisu beer to go with it. They didn’t have my favorite Yebisu Black.

If you’re eating, you might want to put whatever you’re eating/drinking down before proceeding.

Some photos below are NSWE (Not Safe When Eating). Not “North South West East”. ^^.

Shinkansen Toilet

Standard shinkansen toilet. Pretty much like what you might find on an airplane.

Shinkansen Sink

The sink on the other hand, is simply amazing. A three-in-one dispenser! Water, soap and even hot air!

When’s your next shinkansen ride?

I love the shinkansen. My big memory is of the train attendant selling snacks and beer on the train. I enjoyed an Yebisu on my last shinkansen trip.
