My first 2 Macs

Apple (1)

While looking though my photo library from years gone by, I chanced upon this photo. Taken sometime between my first and second year in Japan. I got the powerbook before I came to Japan. Prior to Japan, I was quite the PC expert. I jumped ship because I wanted to try something new.

New country, new experiences, new personal computer.

If there was ever a Apple cult, I had my calling then. The 12in Powerbook was my very first Apple. The big black panther reigned supreme then. Exposé really blew me away and it took quite a while for me to come to terms with Mac OS X not having a registry! It was indeed the “fruit of forbidden knowledge”. One byte and I infected everyone around me. ^^.

The iMac came a little later. If memory serves, it was the last batch of G5 iMacs that Apple made. I traded it in for quite a good sum when the Aluminum iMacs came out. The good thing about Apple products is the resale value. A good friend of mine takes full advantage and trades in his old Mac for a brand new model every year.

I haven’t looked back since. The Mac is a joy to use and if anyone asks me for a recommendation, I always send them to the Apple store. ^^.

The powerbook served me a good 3.5 years. Within that period, I added more RAM, had a hard disk change and a battery replaced for free under a battery recall program. After those events, the powerbook always felt brand new! I finally parted with my powerbook when Steve Jobs pulled the MacBook Air out of a manilla envelope.

Do you reminisce about your first Mac (or PC)?

I still reminisce about the first computer I built, ended up selling the parts of real cheap just before I moved out to Japan which I kind of regret. No Mac’s for me, to culty.

Been stuck with Win PC since but would love to own a mac if price goes down. I just love it after trying one at an apple products dealer store (not the apple store) during my recent short vacation. When would that be? hmm…

Nice story. I just became a first time Mac owner back in March. I’ll never go back to Windows… Trade in? Does Apple take trade ins?

Apple Japan doesn’t officially take in trade ins, but they do work with a third party. Sofmap in this case.

    Sofmap accepts trade ins.
But if you were to buy a new mac and trade in the old with Sofmap, they’ll add an extra 15% to their valuation of your old mac.
All you have to do is to show them proof that you bought a mac from the apple store recently.
Make sure you keep the manuals etc if you’re planning on trading in. ^^.
    Where do you hail from?

My dad works with computers so every since I was a kid, he always brings in new machines for me to play around with. Was and always will be a PC guy :)

My first computer was the original Mac which my mother got cheaply through her design studies at Melbourne University – we splashed out and got the “Fat Mac” so nicknamed because it had a 512K RAM!! Ah those original CAD apps were hysterical. Even through a Uni degree where they used PCs I stayed a “Mac Girl” until I was working out how much computing power I could get out of a large amount of cash and realised I could get as much computing power and stability AND software AND peripherals for a PC for the same amount as just the Mac hardware box was going to cost and I’ve never been ripped off again hehe.

The good old days of PCs :) My first PC was a 80286 20MHz with 1MB RAM and 20MB HD. Pair that with an EGA video and monitor you got yourself an IBM PC Clone. Then I upgraded to 386SX, 386DX, 486DX, 486DX2, 486DX4, Pentium, Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium 4, then I decided that I can’t keep up with spending all my spare cash on CPUs and Motherboards. So I stopped building my own PCs and instead started buying laptops and prebuilt machines. Last year I decided I have had enough PCs in my life and I got myself an iMac. The latest Windows based system I bought is a Windows Home Server.
