2 Apples per student

July 3rd, 2009

I used to belong to a computational mechanics research lab. All of us had to move when our boss lost his fight with cancer last year. Back then, we had huge, noisy and powerful servers at our disposable for crunching numbers anytime of the week. I even had a chance to administer an Xserve and Xraid (just before Apple discontinued the Xraid). Servers were on the network, so we could practically work from anywhere. All we needed was a simple terminal. The situation is a little different now. After our lab was dismantled, our servers were sent off to the four corners of the world. My junior and I work out of our MacBooks now. I use my iMac for running time-consuming calculations while I work on my MacBook. At least with this setup, I can just leave the iMac running while I’m out and about with my MacBook. My junior on the other hand inherited a mac mini which he has setup as his calculations server. He even has a wintel box under his desk for times when he needs to use certain windows only software. He controls both computers remotely from his MacBook. Now that I think back, he wasn’t very computer literate when he joined the lab. He certainly has come a long way.
