Spotted these cool USB Keys when I visited the local Apple Store recently. Pretty cool design. I used to buy USB drives whenever I felt they were cheap. Will usually pick up a 2GB for ¥500. Since it’s so cheap, I figured it saves me the trouble of sorting out what to delete in my other thumbdrives. Are you guilty of that too? I’ve got 6GB spread over a family of 4 drives. 1+1+2+2. But as USB drives gain capacity, that’s all about to change for me.
Most of the time I only use my USB drives for backup, sometimes for sharing files. I’ve done such a good job of evangelizing that I don’t usually have to bother with the FAT32 format anymore. ^^. Transfer over FAT32 is really slow and the first thing I always do is to reformat the drive. Do you have this habit too?
Really like this design. Slick, sturdy… metallic. Know of any other slick USB drives?

I just got myself a 32GB thumb drive … I know it’s a big risk to carry around such an expensive equipment when it’s so easy to lose, but after having 2 portable HDDs fail to function over the course of 2 years, I figured I need something more reliable and sturdy.
So I went shopping the other day (saw this USB Key thing by the way … they had 2 versions in Thailand. It’s been around a while) and bought me a SanDisk Cruzer Contour 32GB for about the same price as a 250GB portable HDD. I had a hard time deciding … but I intend to use it mainly for synching work documents between home MacBook and office iMac … and those documents measure in at 20GB right now. Even though the HDD would have be much much more capacious, I didn’t need all that space and I can’t afford to have it fail to connect like what happened last week.
The SanDisk Cruzer Contour (which is GORGEOUS by the way), came in FAT32 and the first think I did was reformat it for the Mac. The performance improved significantly for file transfers. Also I erased all that U3 auto-encryption crap because it’s really not needed for the Mac … I just created an encrypted disk image, which is actually more secure anyway (128 bit versus 256 bit key) and much easier to work with.
Even though the Contour is more expensive than many 32GB USBs out there … the design is simply the most beautiful that I have seen, and it’s so sturdy too. And it goes perfectly with the new MacBook Pros! (even though I don’t have those yet …)

It is true that design is important, but when you have important information stored on your flash drive, you want to make sure it is secure. I simply use a USB drive that I trust. I believe that in order to really backup and encrypt your files, having a tangible external like an encrypted USB drive is the safest way to go. Check it out.

thought about getting those Lacie key thumbdrives too but I dont know if I would actually put it on my keychain with all my keys together somehow I think it would get on my nerves having all my keys connected to my computer lol^^. verbatim has some kind of really small usb drive too havent checked it out yet but I might check that one out and attach it to my cellphone or something.

I think I’m past the phase where I want my electronic products to look sleek and sexy. These days I just go with whatever’s cheapest on Amazon lol
