Xserve and Xraid

My babies were taken away from me a little over 2 weeks ago… With our lab closing down and all, stuff had to go. The Mac servers which I’ve so painstakingly set up were sent off to another university in Kyushu. I would have loved to bring them home. ^^.

The Xserve and Xraid server rack. Apple doesn’t do the Xraid anymore. I suppose the Xraid is now a collector’s item? No?

xserve 2

We only had one of each. It was our file server.

That’s alot of harddisk slots isn’t it. ^^.

xserve 8

The all important server key. Lose this, and it’s a going to be a real bother unlocking the servers.

Just photos of silver apples.

It’s fun being in a computational mechanics lab. You get to use many fast calculation servers. We used our Xserve G5 only for serving files. Imagine what we had for number crunching. ^^.

That’s how the Xserve G5 looks like inside. Very pretty.

I hope the servers get used where they are going. Would be a real waste if they were just left in a room gathering dust. Don’t know many people who actually touched or have seen an Xserve in the flesh (or aluminum shell). Xraid even! Am glad that I had a chance to tinker around, play with and administer it. It was a blast! ^^.

Computational mechanics. ^^. We crunch numbers and avoid performing experiments.

We have 3 with about 21 TB total – 1 G5 with xraid fibre & 2 newer Intel units with scsi raid… great file servers for photoimaging & also do a very nice job of supporting the Windows clients, you can’t even tell there’s a Mac on the other end. They behave very nicely in a mixed platform environment & solved a lot of integration problems for us
