The Gyudon
When I first came to Japan…. well, maybe not first, but when I was old enough to travel to Japan on my own, after my first bowl of gyudon (牛丼, beef bowl) at Yoshinoya, I thought, I could eat this everyday! Starting at ¥380 a bowl, it’s food for champions! ¥330 if you go for a butadon (豚丼, pork bowl).
Most Yoshinoya outlets are open 24 hours. Besides the conbini, this is the only place to eat at 3am in the morning.
Some are catered for high volume.
Take a look at the menu. Unless you mix and match, there is nothing above ¥700.
While there are other things like… grilled beef set, grilled pork set etc on the menu, the basic staple food is gyudon.
Flag down one of their staff when you’re done deciding with a “sumimasen!”. Place your order and wait about 2-3 minutes.
Yummy isn’t it.
Most people add loads of ginger. Preserved ginger is complimentary. Theoretically, you could buy a bowl of gyudon and stay for the red ginger. ^^.
You get a point card too. It’s their way of repaying customer loyalty. I never have mine with me so I always end up getting a new one with a promise that they’ll combine it when I bring both cards. I have a problem carrying all the different point cards that come with purchases. In fact, I don’t carry any at all. It fattens my wallet. Wallet fat on cash, yes. Wallet fat on point cards, … no. ^^.
Oh yeah. Don’t forget to pay on the way out.
