Scenes from a Japanese Nijikai

Scenes from a Japanese Nijikai

Recently had a chance to catch up with some old friends. We were having a little get together to commemorate our late Professor who passed away late last year. It was also the 15th year anniversary of our research lab. 15th and last. Well… Anyway, most of us headed to a 二次会, Nijikai, which literally means second party.

I just realized after looking at these pictures that there were no girls! None of them came to the nijikai!

Most nijikai-s are held at an 居酒屋 (izakaya), a Japanese-style pub which serves drinks and food. It’s more of a place to drink and a “oh, there’s food too if you’re hungry” kinda place. Sometimes the guys head off to have a bowl of ramen after. Rasuta ramen and Musashi ya are quite popular places after a nijikai at Hiyoshi, Keio stronghold. ^^.

Lots to drink, eat and talk at the nijikai. Some don’t make it out of the izakaya on their own legs. ^^.

Love 二次会s! They’re always more intimate than the first ones, because the people you go with are already your drinking buddies.

Love the hashigo concept: “We’ve spent enough time here and things are winding down, so I say we GTFO and find a new establishment. Who’s with me?” And yeah, the ones that tag along are either your drinking pals or soon will be. :)

Sorry to hear about your research lab though…
