Upgraded recently. Moved from a 20in iMac to a 24in iMac. If you’re in Japan, Sofmap has a great deal for trading in old macs. Certain times of the year, they have a promotion with Apple. Buy anything worth ¥10,000 or more from the Apple online store and they’ll give you extra 15% of their quoted trade-in price on your old Mac. You might probably get more selling it yourself by putting in on Yahoo! Auction or the like, but I find it rather messy and prefer trading it in, if the value is good (otherwise, it becomes a hand-me-down). ^^.
Photo shows actual size. Great for cutouts. But if you hope to get a good price trading it in, make sure to keep everything. Manuals, stickers etc. When I packed up my 20in, everything looked brand new.
My little corner. This was where the 20in sat. You can see it’s footprint on the little wooden desk. Also on the desk is my MyStudio harddisk for Time Machine. FW800′s the way to go. ^^.
The mousepad right in front. Just like on a Macbook.
See the nice new shorter Apple keyboard? What do you think? Like?
Here’s a closer look. I don’t mind a wired keyboard. Just don’t like a wired mouse. Still using the same wireless mighty mouse I bought 2 odd years ago. The side buttons are gray, unlike the current white. You know what that means? Yes! I have a spare wired mighty mouse!
I love Apple packaging.
5 sweet words. “Designed by Apple in California”
Everything for the iMac, you can find in this little box. The packaging comes different if you order the usual long keyboard. I have to use an English keyboard. The short space bar key on a Japanese keyboard is just criminal!
Doesn’t it makes you wonder what if you had ordered 3 mice?
Everything else in that box. Only the keyboard and the black cloth will be staying out. Everything else will be kept waiting for the next trade-in opportunity. ^^.
The new iMac has a tapered foot. It’s rather thin in front. One will hardly notice it’s even there!
That’s my usual setup. I have to have my mouse close by. Don’t have to more my hand too much. Besides, between your left and right, there’s a very nice empty piece of real estate. ^^.
You can see how the stand tapers. I also like to push the keyboard under the iMac when I’m not using it. Really love the wafer thin keyboards that Apple has been churning out.
There’s this very nice Apple logo on the back of the iMac. It’s a pity I have it against a wall. Will put the iMac’s back facing my new study entrance when I get a study. ^^.
All the ports that come with the iMac. FW800 is my dedicated Time Machine port.
Everything is in place now. All that’s left is to turn it on. For those not familiar with an iMac, where do you think the “on” button is? ^^.
Yokoso!
Captain, we have reached Warp 9.99.
Really like it how there’s just one multilingual consumer Mac OS X. No, home basic, home advanced, home pro, English version, Japanese version, Ukraine version etc. Switching languages is dead simple on a Mac.
Setting it to transfer my Time Machine backed up account. First time doing this. Was quite nervous. I actually created 1 Time Machine backup on HD 1, 1 user account backup on HD 1 and another user account backup on HD 2. Just in case something went wrong. Always have to have a backup for your backup. ^^.
There was about 250GB on the Time Machine backup. 1 hour 33 minutes is pretty fast!
I’ve been using the new keyboard for a while now. Typing on it is good. Nothing different to the long one there. The only thing that needed a little adjustment was my brain. I centered the keyboard to the screen as usual, but my fingers were guilty of straying to the left on some occasions. It’s all good now. All I have to do now is remember that there’s no numpad. I just reached for the numpad once today but ended up poking the table. You might probably want to get the long version. I got the new short one because, 1) it’s new. ^^. 2) it’s just like the wireless, only with a wire. The wire comes with USB benefits.
The other thing I noticed recently when looking at the integrated iSight camera. Given that it’s positioned higher than on the 20in, the iSight on the 24in is tilted down to point straight at your face. Pretty good move there.
Love the new iMac. Just one thing though. With the amount of light projecting out of the iMac and unto me, I’m worried for my Sharingan. ^^.

I want one. It seems almost criminal if I don’t have one.

Nice! I just got a refurbished Macbook (Unibody) for my SO to upgrade from her old G4 iBook. I was at first worried about the data transfer issues because the Unibody Macbooks dont come with Firewire but I was pleasantly surprised to see Apple add the functionality to migrate data across Ethernet.

Hey Gen, I don’t remember if the older G4 iBooks support gigabit LAN. Do they?

Hi! First time here, nice blog!
I have a question for you: I’m living in Japan too, I owned a second hand iBook G4 from Softmap’s Apple Store in Akihabara. Still have one month of warranty.
I want to buy a new MacBook and give my iBook plus money, you know if I can do this?
Thanks!

I r saw FREEing Haruhi bunny figure and a figure i’m not really familiar with.
Mac is great though I haven’t touched nor used it even once and would probably never own one. It’s just too costly.
