Malaysian Food #1 Nasi Kandar
Nasi Kandar and teh (tea) ice. Nasi Kandar is a popular Malaysian dish which originated from Penang, an island state in northern Malaysia.
To buy Nasi Kandar, first you have to choose what rice you want. There’s steamed plain white rice and flavored rice, which is probably nasi biryani. Nasi means rice in Malay by the way. Once you have chosen your rice, side dishes are added to the plate; usually cucumber and pineapple is invovled. You can see it on the plate across the table in the photo. The next step is to choose the curries. There’s a variety to choose from, fish, squid, seafood, chicken, lamb, vegetable… The very last thing you should add to your plate is a sambal (chilli) egg. Some crackers are also thrown in too. The meal you see in the photo costs about ¥300. Pretty cheap if you deduct airfare. ^^.
You know how it got its name?
The term “Nasi Kandar” came from a time when nasi hawkers or vendors would kandar (balance) a pole on their shoulder with two huge containers. One filled with rice and the other probably with curries. Look at the logo between “original” and “kayu” and you’ll get the idea. The name stuck ever since. Talk about “a balanced meal”. ^^. When in Malaysia, you’ll probably see “Nasi Kandar” on most Tamil Muslim or “Malaysian Mamak” restaurants.
Look at all the yummy curries.
Very popular place to grab some grub.
Fish head curry. Yummy.
These guys saw me taking photos and asked me to take photos of them too. I was tapped on the shoulder.
On this trip back, I noticed a lot more Kayu Nasi Kandar branches around. But if you want to drop in where I usually eat when I’m in town for Nasi Kandar, here’s the address. There’re loads of other yummies to eat in SS2 too. ^^.
If you’re hosting an open house, wedding etc, they do catering too.
I’m craving for some Nasi Kandar right now… you?
