I only placed it on the surface, which was probably cold, after boiling some soup on the stove. Physics created the cracks with a loud BANG! Gave me a shock! Sure is beautiful though. I take no responsibility if you are going to try this on your own. ^^.
Yes, sudden temperature changes cracks glass if it isn’t properly tempered or doesn’t have a composition which can tolerate it.
Just the other day, I had gotten a Pyrex glass baking dish for making lasagna. Shortly into the oven, it shattered into large shards instead of breaking properly like this (yours is still in one piece). After researching it, it’s apparently a common problem…
Wow.. that’s REALLY odd b/c Pyrex is never, ever supposed to do that. I was going to purchase several new Pyrex dishes but now I’m having second thoughts. Thanks for the post. =)
REALLY? 1998?? ….wow. I can’t help but wonder what changed 11 years ago.
I googled “pyrex cracking” and found complaints dating back to 2.18.2003 at the Consumer Affairs website. After reading some of their horror stories, I definitely don’t want the stuff in my kitchen any more.
It’s really kind of sad because some of my fondest memories are of my grandmother teaching me to cook with ‘her’ Pyrex. She always used to tell me that there wasn’t anything better because “metal rust is toxic and aluminum is like throwing your money away”.

I was surprised, too. From what I’ve read online, it is best to avoid it unless you can obtain Pyrex glass from before 1998.
