The YouTube LIVE IN TOKYO event was pretty fun. Got to meet lots of youtubers. Kinda motivated me to start youtubing too. ^^.
I let the Tokyo Storm Trooper guide me in.
Getting into armor isn’t as easy as you might expect.
Once everything was set, we’ll all good to go! … Maybe one last emeiru.
But once every piece was in place, it was time to greet the queue.
A short interview and dance for members of the press.
Met up with TokyoCooney and gimmeabreakman (Victor) at the entrance. Can’t really see Victor there, but he’s in a superman t-shirt. Will see him in later photos.
Everyone in there is a famous youtuber. Can you name all of them? I don’t have a prize to give away though, you’ll just get the satisfaction of getting it right. ^^. That should be enough right?
TkyoSam jamming away with his new guitar buddy.
The youtubers got to do a “live” show. I initially thought that it was supposed to be broadcasted live on the internet, but it wasn’t to be. Censorship problems maybe? I like the stage though. If only they made it clickable. ^^.
That’s Emily on stage there.
We were all just watching from the bar across the hall. No free drinks for us special “lobby only” pass holders…
Oh yeah, finally a picture with me in it!
Didn’t know them before yesterday. The “nyokinyoki” girls Kahori and Haruka. I nyokinyoki-ed with them for a bit. They said it was for world peace. Nothing to stop me there. They took a ton of videos yesterday. Maybe I’ll end up in some of them.
Danny was also roped in. ^^.
Remember Victor hiding in the shadows earlier? That’s him right there on stage. He was taking a video of the audience from his white MacBook. I wonder how that worked out.
Turns out that the main event wasn’t the youtubers, but the various artists that were invited to perform. Couldn’t take any photos in the main stage area though. I had wanted to get a shot with BoA. Was pretty disappointed. I had initially thought that the event was more of an informal party. Still, it was really exciting to see her perform live on stage. She did 3 numbers, the first of which was her new American debut single “Eat You Up”.
You can check out her live perform here. If you’re looking at the stage, I was somewhere on the right. Only BoA’s live is up (at the moment). Makes me wonder, maybe she was the “main main” event.
Update: whoops…. made an honest mistake. Didn’t see the “12 videos” next to LIVE Performance in livetokyo’s channel. Check out the Blue Man Group’s live in this video. Concept #10 Getting a closer look at the audience. The slightly gross thingy I spoke of in the next paragraph.
I was inbetween the main stage and the youtube “live” stage. Only managed to catch BoA, the Blue Man Group and Genki Rockets. The live performances were great. If I’m not mistaken, the Blue Man Group is in Tokyo doing a show right now. Any of you in Tokyo thinking of going? In their live at this event, they singled out someone in the audience and stuck a video camera down his throat! The kind that surgeons use in operations. Could see all the down his “tube”…. was a little gross. Especially when you start seeing red veins….
The stormtrooper was one of the official reporters of the event.
Danny was introduced to the crowd and talked about his website and what he blogs about. He took out his favorite figure, which I heard is always not far from his side. ^^. I don’t carry any figures with me everyday, but I have been thinking about including a certain object in some of my photos… kinda like a mark. Have any of you toyed with that idea?
Danny was pretty happy with his freebie YouTube bag. I didn’t get one though… sigh… Thanks to Danny, I did however get a youtube tube top and a few stickers.
You know these guys? Their faces are all wired up to control music. A twitch of the nose produces a certain sound etc…
Like this. Pretty cool if you ask me. An interesting use of your face muscles.
Let’s take a break and look at some YouTube cuties.
whoops… sorry, not that one up top. ^^.
That’s much better.
I was in Kyusyu during the weekend. Was supposed to fly back at night, but I switched to a morning flight so that I could come back in time for the event. I had 3 days worth of laundry and no external flash unit with me. Don’t really like the inbuilt flash, but also didn’t really have a choice since it was pretty dark. I’ll blog about Kyusyu later. Except for the onsen, didn’t really do much there. I drove 450km in a Honda Fit while in Kyusyu.
Bumped into Yuko at the event. Looking fine as always. ^^.
This guy, I have lots of respect for. Heita3 made musical instruments from vegetables. No kidding! He was featured on TV a few times too.
Check out his video. There are translated notes in the video for non-Japanese speaking folks.
I also met Magibon. You know, the girl with big eyes and over 4 million views on youtube?
There’s even a song about her from fatblueman. I must admit, it’s rather catchy.
After the event, a group of us made our way to a 二次会、nijikai (second party).
Sam and Jay waiting at Shin Kiba station.
Youtubers sitting obediently in the train?!?
I think not. ^^.
Finally, it’s been officially uncovered! Stormtroopers need to pay for transport too! ^^.
Some stormtroopers have all the fun.
This little girl was so cute. She saw Danny and went, “Ah! Darth Vader だ!”.
After traveling for miles, we eventually settled down in little Hong Kong somewhere on the sixth floor in Odaiba Decks.
The Emperor wasn’t far behind too. ^^.
The restaurant patrons got a real treat when all of us stormed the place.
Danny made his usual rounds and distributed his namecard. I don’t have a namecard, but have been thinking about making one… a rather cheeky one. Let’s see how that goes. If I do get to making it, I’ll blog about it. ^^.
The meishi-less way of exchanging contacts.
Scenes from a chinese restaurant.
The fatblueman. Love his visor.
To top off the night, we got Simon performing the Maori War Cry for us!
YouTube Live in Tokyo was fun. I met lots of youtubers and they in turn inspired me to start youtubing more often. Hopefully the enthusiasm won’t wear out in the next few days. ^^.
I’ve only posted a few photos here. But if you’re interested, there are 150 photos in my flickr account.
It’s amazing how YouTube has created such a lively community. ^^.

The San Francisco event was broadcast live, but at the Tokyo event they simply uploaded videos like any other YouTube account person would. Many BoA fans were upset at the long delay to see BoA perform!

hi Ken, great photo summary. I am glad someone was getting it all documented. Wish I had had more time to connect Sunday. What’s your story? Long time in Japan? Where’s home for you?
I am feeling Youtube drunk. I think I need to avoid it for a couple days just to recover a little and get my head back in the analog world…
