Food in Sendai

I meant to post this a long time ago. Don’t remember what distracted me from it. ^^. Tell me if I’ve managed to make you salivate.

I’ve been to Sendai twice. Once for business and twice for pleasure. ^^.

Although there are lots to eat in Sendai, if you’re there, there should be only one thing on your mind. Gyutan (beef tongue). Sendai’s famous for that and you will find gyutan restaurants literally littered around the whole city. Places like this.

That serve a set meal like this.

The most famous of them is chain of restaurants called Rikyu, 利久. 牛タン炭焼 (gyutan sumi yaki) loosely means charcoal-grilled beef tongue. They have quite a number of stores around Sendai city. Here is an older post I wrote when I first went there. They serve a variety of gyutan dishes, including the venerable gyutan set meal.

牛タン極定食… gyutan kiwami tei syoku, beef tongue extreme set meal. Kiwami means extreme. 厚くてジューシー… atsukute jyu-shi-, thick and juicy!

But Sendai is not all gyutan, there are also other places and other cuisines to try. Sendai also serves pretty yummy ramen. I found a place where Jackie Chan used to dine… once… when he visited Sendai for some promotion. It’s in Loft’s basement right opposite Sendai station.

If you’re on a budget, doughnuts are always a good source of nourishment. ^^

Doughnuts and some coffee maybe?

Getting to Sendai from Tokyo is about a 2 hour ride north on the Shinkansen. If you’ve been there, do you know of any other nice places to dine in Sendai? Most Japanese only go there for one thing. 牛タン. I don’t know about you… but I’m also drowning in drool here. ^^.
