The Beast in my Belly
The main Jiro ramen store is in Mita (二郎ラーメン三田本店). Yeap. The beast I’m talking about it none other than the infamous Jiro ramen. It’s not fine dining, but it will definitely fill you up in ways fine dining never can. ^^. The shop’s about the size of an average ramen store; seats about 12-15. It’s housed up in this tiny triangular shaped building right next to Keio University’s Mita campus. Guess where all the students go for lunch?
This is the queue at 1230, lunch time. It’s currently summer holidays, so you don’t get to see many students. But you do get to see lots of men in suits, salarymen from around the area. Take the length of this queue and add 3 more to the back and you’ll get 30 minutes of waiting time. The long queue is there everyday. hmm…. did I spy girls in the queue? Oh! There she is enjoying her ramen.
Lots of men in white shirts. I’m usually more cautious when I wear white. Whenever I eat, something definitely gets spattered on my shirt. Just there’s not beating Murphy’s Law.
They have only 3 things on their menu…. wait… scratch that. There’s only 1 thing on the menu. Ramen. Oily tonkotsu ramen. Ramen for ¥500, Ramen with pork added for ¥600 and Ramen with a double serving for pork for ¥700. Pretty cheap. If you’re really really really really really really really (I’m not exaggerating) hungry, you can order a large portion too. Difference in price is only ¥100. I only went with the regular serving with pork added for ¥600. This is what it looks like. Noodles at the bottom, pork in the middle and lots of cabbage on top.
Don’t let the photo deceive you. This is a beast! After 30 minutes, I only got down to here.
And I was full already! It came large portions of extra chunky pork. Soup was rather oily. A friend once told me he felt like a car when he went (It was my first time). I’m writing this post at 2247 and I’m still full. I didn’t finish… more like it was I couldn’t finish. But all the other customers gobbled everything up! The half and hour I spent fighting with this beast, I’ve seen 3 customers come, eat and leave. That’s an average of 10 minutes per customer! What about you? Fancy challenging yourself to a bowl of Jiro ramen? Are there any restaurants near your place that serve food in insanely huge volumes? Despite having a hard time downing all of this, I didn’t have much of a problem with the Gozilla Steak.
