Namaste India 2008

Neil attended the Vietnamese Festival the week before. You can read about this experience here. I had wanted to go, but when I had time, the weather decided otherwise… but last week was a different matter.

Last weekend there was an India festival. The whole section of Yoyogi Park right opposite NHK Studio Park was cornered off and dedicated to this event. Stores were set up and many were promoting tours to India, Indian wares, arts and craft etc. Basically almost everything Indian. There were also movies from Bollywood. I grew up in a multi-racial and multi-ethnic environment, so I’ve been exposed to Indian culture. Indian movies are quite interesting, provided they come with subtitles. ^^. Long movies though, with lots of singing and dancing. I find it fascinating that whenever a song starts, dancers just pop out from thin air. ^^.

Anyway, back to the event. Besides Indian tours and wares, there’s a big section for the hungry. Food! Food and beer! I think Kingfisher (green bottle) is the most popular beer in India. I’ve had some before and it’s pretty smooth. Might have tried others, but Kingfisher is the one that left an impression.

Whenever there is a food event, or rather an event that sells food too, there are always these recycling stations around. We in Japan are big on recycling; we love to separate our trash before chucking them out. PET bottles, cans, paper cups, styrofoam, chopsticks, combustible, non-combustible etc. Things get cleaned accordingly and reused in future events… just kidding ^^. Do you have a comprehensive recycling program where you are?

Events like this are always good opportunities to get out and enjoy the weekend with family and friends.

I’ve been to India once. Chennai actually. I was there for a conference and had a great time, despite having experienced what an occidental gaijin feels like in Japan. ^^
