I spotted this sign at the stairs leading to Rinnoji Temple from the carpark. World heritage site. No smoking anywhere!
Area map for Rinnoji Temple. I didn’t really visit the temple. I was more interested in the shrines ahead. See those gates right at the top of the picture? Those are entrances to the shrines. Tokugawa Ieyasu’s final resting place is right beyond those gates in the Toshogu Shrine (more pictures coming up soon!). Who is Tokugawa Ieyasu?
It’s a long walk up a gravel path. If you strain your eyes a little and look closely at the picture, you’ll be able to see folks dressed in blue sweeping the path. Why would they sweep a gravel path? That’s something that I haven’t figured out.
There is this tall “heart” (心, not sure if it’s read kokoro or shin here. I think it’s shin.) monument near the entrance to the “3 buddha hall” Sanbutsudoh (三仏堂). Had to pay, so I didn’t go into the hall. Everything requires an entrance fee. sigh…
It says Nikkozan Rinnoji Temple. Only took a shot and waltzed past it ^^.
An appetizer. The family crest of the Tokugawa shogunate!
After the long stroll, finally at the gate leading to the Toshogu Shrine! This gate seems to be made from stone! Quite different to the wooden ones I’ve seen so far. The way it’s put together… looking the lines where the joints are located, reminds me of lego ^^.
Next stop, Toshogu Shrine!

We took a small bus to Nikko,
and when we were parking,
our bus driver backed up too far and ended up breaking the chain that marked the parking area.
Everyone just shrugged it off and we changed parking spots,
it was pretty hilarious!
