Kegon Falls (華厳滝 Kegon no Taki)
Another interesting spot to visit in Nikko. Kegon Falls is quite the majestic waterfall, apparently formed when the Daiya River was rerouted by lava flows (read it on wikipedia). Read something else about it I found quite disturbing…
“The Kegon Falls are infamous for suicides, especially among Japanese youth”
Probably not a good place to be late at night. ^^.
Anyway, it was quite a drive to get there from central Nikko. You have to drive up Initial D-like roads! Up the mountain with lots of curves. Down’s the same. Was way more fun going down than up though ^^.
This is a scenic stop along the road, 1173m above sea level.
I forgot to take a picture of the elevator compound. There’s this elevator that brings you down 100m so that you get to view the waterfall upclose and personal. Once you’re down, there’s this bunker-like passage that’ll lead you to the viewing platform.
Found this interesting. In that bunker-like passage, there’s this image of Buddha in the walls along the way. Floors are wet so be careful when you walk!
At last! Kegon Falls!
The air was quite wet. My lens was covered with droplets of water. You can kinda see the mist from this photo.
This photo was taken from another viewing platform near the elevator compound. This one’s free, elevator’s not. It offers a different view though. From the top.
Right at the top of Kegon Falls.
The area around Kegon Falls. Notice the small waterfall on the lower left? That’s quite a drop isn’t it.
I wonder if there’s like a secret cave with treasure at the bottom of the falls…
Any nice waterfalls near where you live?
